Google’s Caffeine Update: Hype or Hope?

Tuesday, June 15th, 2010

Google has shaken up the search engine optimization world again with an algorithmic change called Caffeine. What does Caffeine and why is it important? It has been a few weeks since Google announced the roll out of its new highly caffeinated indexing service. The Caffeine update has been in the back of every Orange County SEO companys mind for months. It’s important, frustrating and worrisome when certain sites aren’t ranking at all or there are obscure websites ranking ahead of content rich SEO friendly sites. It was all about “caffeine”. Now it’s possible to observe what caffeine is and does.

Bottom line: Caffeine aims to crawl and analyze web pages much faster than Google’s old system. The purpose is for newer content to rank quicker on Google Search Engine Results Pages (SERPs). Google seeks to provide “50% fresher results for web searches”. This surely benefits a base theory of effective SEO: Fresh Content on web pages assist web page ranking for competitive search terms.

Since this update we have seen few major changes in Google SERPs. It could be early but, in our opinion, Google’s Caffeine update has been over-hyped.

Link Popularity Campaign + Optimized Web Pages = Convertable Targeted Traffic

Monday, June 14th, 2010

What must a website owner do when to attract targeted Google traffic? If you start by optimizing your pages, you might not succeed, because you must first answer the question, “Optimize for what?” You must optimize your pages only for a specific set of search keywords and build one way links for those key phrases. If you think you know the best search keywords you must optimize for, you might be wrong.

Often, we think that we know what people are looking for, but we’re wrong. We think that people are searhing for our product name but they might be searching for something else. People frequently google different words than we expect. Example: if you spend an enormous amount of time optimizing and building links for “notebooks” then you might be surprised when it helps a lot less than you’d expect because people are searching for laptops.

That’s why successful SEO campaigns always begin with keyword research. Utilizing tools, such as Google ‘s Keyword Tool a site owner can discern the best combination of demand and competitiveness for keyword phrases. You enter the words you think you should be optimizing for, and see what the Google keyword research tool suggests.

For some of you this is basic advice, but small business web design owners are sometimes convinced that SEO doesn’t work precisely because they’ve skipped the step of keyword research. I think they do this, in part, because search experts (me included) sometimes spend so much time talking about optimizing title tags and building links that we forget the “marketing” part of “search marketing,” causing people to hear only the “optimization” message. If we don’t help businesses identify their customers’ needs, then we are selling a cure for a problem they don’t have (yet).

Summary: effective keyword research, building focused title tags and engaging in an effective link popularity campaign will generate targeted traffic for most small business websites.

US versus England World Cup Soccer Security Threat

Friday, June 11th, 2010

The South Africa World Cup opener between England and the USA on 12 June 2010 poses unique security problems for the South African authorities for two reasons. First, both countries have been targets for terrorists, notably from Al-Qaeda, and there have been warnings that suicide bombers are planning to target the match.

And, secondly, England fans have a reputation – though one these days mostly unjustified – of looking for trouble. English football has had a long history of football hooliganism that has mostly been stamped out but there are still some who look to England international matches as an outlet for their aggression.

This twin threat creates a potential disaster for the event and one that the American Power Security forces are determined to stamp out.
